Writing Rocks!

Setting writing goals for my students can sometimes be challenging. To make this easier, I made a classroom poster with four specific writing goals for each student. Simply print (cardstock recommended), laminate, and hang using ribbon. Attach the pencils with each students' name onto clothespins and place on the specific goal that student is currently focusing on. This will help you keep track of their needs while providing your students with clear visuals describing their specific objectives.

I also included writing paper with a checklist for students to review once they are finished with their writing. No more excuses for forgotten periods!

Building Words: Reading Rods Literacy Center

I love incorporating play into my teaching as much as possible.  When I plan for my week I try to keep worksheet centers to a minimum. This year, I've been creating products that I can use with Reading Rods. Reading Rods have quickly turned into a favorite center for my students. I found Reading Rods at a local teaching store, but I found them on Amazon for much cheaper. You can get them HERE.

Instructions: Print cards out on card stock. I like to glue them in construction paper for added durability. Laminate cards and write answers on the back. Students will spell the words using Reading Rods and they may look on the back to self-correct.

It's the perfect no-prep center!

Slow and Steady Wins the Race??

It's probably too early to start thinking about back to school... scratch that, it definitely is.  I may have even beat the notorious "It's the most wonderful time of the year..." Staples commercials. However, in an attempt to stay on top of things this year, I'm beginning to get things ready for September.

This week, I made a chevron-themed back to school bundle. Of course, I'm giving my fabulous followers a FREEBIE! Below, is a link to download a yellow chevron 'Welcome to Kindergarten' banner. I suggest printing this on card stock, using a hole-punch, and stringing twine through the holes.

Send me a picture of your banner hanging in your classroom and get the entire packet for FREE! Simply add the photo to the comments section or email it to me at happylittlekindergarten@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing it in your classroom!

Have No Fear, It's the End of the Year!

Hello Summer!

There is nothing in the world that I love more than summer. A beach girl to core, I spend my summers soaking up the rays and sipping on margaritas on Long Beach Island, New Jersey (insert GTL joke here). After 9 months trapped in the narrow confines of a crowded classroom with 20 some 5 & 6 year-olds, a margarita (or two) is well-deserved. As my last day of school countdown dwindles and summer slowly approaches, I can almost smell the salt water more and more every day! Who's with me?

Despite my love for summer and the beach, I still feel my heartstrings pull as I prepare to say goodbye to my very small yet inquisitive little friends. Even as I'm laying on the sandy beaches of LBI, I can't help but wonder how my students are spending their summers. As their teacher, I obviously envision them diligently reading their leveled books while they analyze the story elements and respond in their journals. Hopefully they are remembering how we worked so meticulously to separate sentences with periods and begin new ones with capital letters.

It's so hard not to fall in love with them. I've grown to admire their curiosity and look forward to seeing them move from grade-to-grade.  I like to leave my students with little gifts and mementos to remember their Kindergarten year. I hope that they reflect back on this year each year as they grow and remember all of the important and fun things we did in our time together. This year, I'm planning on making a slideshow and giving a CD to each child. I'm not a huge fan of sending home a huge packet of worksheets and I cringe at the thought of my students sitting inside on such beautiful days completing rote activities when they cold be outside enjoying summer. I decided to make a fun Getting Ready for 1st Grade Activity Calendar for my students instead. This calendar gives then fun and educational activities to do with their friends and family all summer long. I know that as I enjoy my summer, my students are given opportunities to do the same.

You can download your own calendar by clicking on the picture.

What's Wrong With Play Anyway?? What Happened to Play in Kindergarten?

Making Play a Priority in My Kindergarten Classroom

As the end of the year approaches, I can't help but find myself reflecting on the year. This is my second year teaching Kindergarten. Over the past two years, I have learned an enormous amount about the developmental needs of young learners. First and foremost, I have learned that 5-year-olds have an incredibly tight schedule: an hour of math, two hours of literacy, 40 minutes of science and social studies. As a kindergarten teacher I find it difficult to fit in the social and emotional centers such as puppets, blocks, dramatic play, art, water/sand table, which are so important to the development of our 5 and 6-year-olds. The kindergarten I remember used to be all about developing social and emotional skills, but now I find that we have succumbed to the pressures of preparing children to tackle the rigorous demands of 1st grade and preparing them for high-stakes standardized testing.

This year I participated in a Kindergarten Seminar at the New Jersey Department of Education and spent a great deal of time this year working with other early childhood teachers, master teachers, and administrators discussing developmentally appropriate practices in kindergarten. I found myself reflecting on my own teaching in  a much different way. I realized the importance of teaching my students to solve problems, work together, share and accept each other’s differences through play. More importantly, I learned that I can do this while still implementing the Common Core Standards in developmentally appropriate ways. Who knew?!?!

The first change I made to my classroom was eliminating morning work. While attending the Kindergarten Seminar, a colleague asked me why I had my students complete morning work, but I honestly could not find a reasonable answer to give her. It was this moment that I realized that I did have time to give my students opportunities to problem solve, make choices, have fun in my classroom every day through play. All I had to do was eliminate morning work. I remember thinking to myself, "How had I never considered this!?"

When I returned to my classroom the next week, I immediately trashed my monotonous worksheets and instead greeted my students with puzzles, blocks, stories, puppets, paint, and journals each morning. I found that my students were more pleasant, argued less, had more fun, and were actually learning! They explored, used critical thinking, learned important social skills, expressed their creativity, solved problems without my assistance, which in turn, created a more pleasant environment for everyone.

Although this is only one of the many changes I made, I felt it was the most influential change I made this school year. I learned that I should be focusing more on making my kindergarten classroom fit the needs of my students instead of my students adapting to fit the needs of my classroom. I am thankful that I had to opportunity to reflect on my teaching in such a significant way. My students will benefit greatly from it and I hope yours do too!
